Apple’s new Maps will learn your commute in iOS 26
Apple Maps is getting an upgrade to understand your commute better, and proactively offer recommendations based on traffic. Apple announced the updates to Maps, coming in iOS 26, during WWDC 2025 on Monday.
The company said your iPhone will now learn your preferred commute, and the routes you often take to go home, to work, or to pick your kids up from school. In the Maps app, your iPhone will suggest these routes, so you can check your commute before you leave and get an idea of how long it will take.
Apple said that even if you don’t start directions on a common route, your iPhone will suggest alternate routes in case of traffic or unexpected slowdowns. The company hopes this feature helps users get to their destinations on time.
iPhone users will also be able to enable their iPhone to remember the restaurants or shops they travel to. The feature is supposed to help users recall where they’ve been, allowing users to view places they’ve visited in the Maps library. The company said users can easily delete visited places with a swipe, and the information is protected with end-to-end encryption.
The Apple Maps update coming to iOS 26 was one of many announcements made at WWDC 2025 on Monday. The company is also redesigning its software design, allowing app developers to access the iPhone’s on-device AI models, and integrating OpenAI’s ChatGPT more deeply into the iPhone.
